Hawai’i Craftsmen, a 501(c)(3) volunteer organization supported by members, donations, and charitable grants, invites all artists residing in the State of Hawaii to enter traditional or non-traditional crafts and 2- and 3-dimensional arts in the categories of clay, fiber, glass, wood, metal, stone, and mixed media into its 51st Annual Statewide Juried Exhibition, opening October 25-November 11, 2018 at the Honolulu Museum of Art School. Participation is open to emerging and established artists. Artworks will be juried and selected at various intake locations throughout the state. Cash awards will be presented at the exhibition opening reception at the Honolulu Museum of Art School Gallery on October 24, 2018 from 6:30-8:30 pm.
Isabella Ellaheh Hughes, Co-Founder and Director, Honolulu Biennial Foundation
Born and raised in Honolulu, Hughes is one of the co-founders and directors of Honolulu Biennial Foundation, an international biennial focused on artists from the cultures linked by the Pacific Ocean. She is also an independent art critic, curator, and food and beverage entrepreneur. Sheʻs written for ArtAsiaPacific, Brownbook, Contemporary Practices, Frieze, Harper’s Art Bazaar Arabia and Ibraaz, and contributed to exhibition catalogues for Honolulu Biennial 2017, Singapore Art Museum, Barjeel Art Foundation, Agha Khan Museum, and Bahrain’s Ministry of Culture. She is the editor of the monograph, Sama Alshaibi: Sand Rushes In (Aperture Foundation, 2015), and has curated exhibitions nationally and internationally, including for Art Dubai Projects, Ayyam Gallery, the Smithsonian National Museum of the American Indian, Transformer Gallery, and Maraya Art Center. A frequent speaker and moderator of panels, Hughes has also served as a nominator for the Smithsonian Artist Research Fellowship Program; Abraaj Capital Art Prize, as well as a juror for the YICCA 2013 International Contest of Contemporary Art, and Art Omi International visual arts residency. Most recently she has served as co-curator of CONTACT: Foreign and Familiar at the Honolulu Museum of Art School in 2016, and juror for the 40th Art Maui Exhibition in 2018.
ELIGIBILITY AND ENTRY FEES
Artists residing in Hawaii are invited to enter traditional or non-traditional crafts with a fresh approach or point of view. The exhibition is open to functional and non-functional 2- and 3-dimensional art in the categories of clay, fiber, glass, wood, metal, stone, and mixed media. Entries must be of original design and created independently within the last two years. Artworks previously included in juried exhibitions on Oahu or displayed in any Honolulu Museum of Art School exhibition are ineligible. Juror selected cash awards will be presented at the exhibition opening reception and awards ceremony at the Honolulu Museum of Art School on October 24, 2018 from 6:30-8:30 pm.
Hawaiʻi Craftsmen members must pay $25 for the first two entries and $10 for each additional entry. Non-members must pay $75 for the first two entries, $10 for each additional entry. Membership must be active through November 1, 2018 to qualify for the discounted member entry fee. Hawaiʻi Craftsmen artists can renew their membership when registering their entries on CaFE. Registration of completed artworks will be accepted only via the online call for entry system, CaFE, at www.CallForEntry.org, a link will also be provided on the Hawaiʻi Craftsmen website during the open registration period. Mail-in registrations and walkin entries are ineligible. New or altered entries will not be accepted after the Oct. 1 deadline. Only completed entries registered on the CaFE website by Oct. 1 will be accepted on intake days for jurying. Artist accounts and digital images of entries must be created and uploaded in CaFE in the designated formats prior to registration. Registrants are advised to update their browsers to the latest versions before logging on to CaFE. Registrants are responsible for the accuracy of all information entered into CaFE. When registering for the annual exhibition on CaFE, images of up to a maximum of 6 completed entries and a 1-page artist statement or bio, must be uploaded in the CaFE designated formats. Please note that participants registering only 1 entry must upload 2 images (e.g. 1 full view, 1 detail or 2 different views of the same art work). If entering more than 2 artworks, be aware that after uploading the minimum of 2 entry images, each additional uploaded image will be charged as an entry; therefore, upload only one image per entry after the minimum requirement of 2 image/entry uploads has been met to avoid being overcharged for duplicates of the same entry.
Intake and jurying of pre-registered entries will occur on Hawaii, Maui, Kauai, and Oahu islands. Entries from Molokai and Lanai will be juried online and artists notified of accepted entries via email on Oct. 11. We highly recommend that applicants format, prepare, and upload their registration information at least 1 week before the Oct. 1 deadline to allow for possible technical difficulties or the accommodation of extra assistance. For technical assistance, please refer to the CaFE tutorials, formatting guides, and help tools provided on this website by clicking on the HELP button in the navigation bar above. Participants WITHOUT computer knowledge or in need of extra registration assistance are requested to contact their island chairs well in advance of the Oct. 1 (7 pm HST) registration deadline to receive individualized help.
Email addresses used during CaFE registration should be accurate to ensure timely communications about your participation in the exhibition. Please make sure that spelling of all text is correct, as this information will be used for the exhibition labels, a catalog of accepted works, and in a gallery notebook containing artist statements.

The juror reserves the right to a final selection of accepted works. Therefore, the decision of the juror is final.
DISPLAY CONDITIONS & REGULATIONS
The installation committee will install all accepted artworks. Entries that pose an installation problem may be rejected or require the artist's assistance. Installation instructions and installation materials needed must be provided at the time of registration. Artists with extremely delicate or unwieldy entries must make separate arrangements for delivery, handling, and pick-up of their artwork. 2-D entries shall not exceed 5’ h x 7’ w; 3-D entries shall not exceed 6‘ h x 6’ w x 6’ d. Entries exceeding 250 lbs. or requiring more than 2 people to handle are ineligible. Care will be taken in handling all artwork; however, Hawaiʻi Craftsmen and the Honolulu Museum of Art School assume no responsibility for loss or damage to art works on display or in transit beyond $150 liability limit—no matter how such damage may have been sustained. All accepted entries will be displayed at the owner’s risk.
Accepted entries must remain in the exhibition for the show’s duration and are subject to photographic reproduction for educational and publicity purposes.
For each accepted piece, Oahu artists will be required to sit the show for one shift, find a substitute, or pay a $30 sitter’s fee per shift. Artists failing to show up for their designated shift must pay a $50 no show fee. Artists from the islands of Hawaii, Maui, Kauai, Molokai, and Lanai are responsible for shipping their work one-way to Oahu in lieu of sitting the show. Molokai & Lanai artists with accepted entries are eligible to receive a $75 shipping subsidy for accepted entries. Entrants must agree to all terms stated herein in order to participate.
DELIVERY AND SHIPMENT OF ARTWORK
Shipping to Oahu Deadline: October 20, 2018
Artworks from Hawaii, Kauai, Maui, and Oahu must be hand delivered to the various intake and jurying locations by dates and times described above. Unless specific group shipping arrangements are made at each separate island, artists from neighbor islands are responsible for shipping their accepted artwork to the Honolulu Museum of Art School Gallery with delivery no later than Saturday, October 20, 2018. Insurance of work in transit to the gallery is highly recommended and is the sole responsibility of the artist.
Artists maintain sole responsibility for the timely delivery of their artwork to the gallery. Entries must be packed in a sturdy reusable container and adequate interior protection for return shipping. Please observe all weight and size limitations noted herein. Containers must be movable by two people and fit through standard doorways. Artists must make additional arrangements for delivery and pick-up of entries needing special handling. Late arrivals, unwieldy art works, and entries that pose a shipping or handling problem may not be accepted.

Accepted entries, even when sold, must remain in the exhibition for the show‘s duration. Final take down and pick up of artwork will be November 11, 2018 from 4:30-8:00 pm at the Honolulu Museum of Art School, Main Gallery. Hawai’i Craftsmen and the Honolulu Museum of Art School Gallery cannot store artwork and cannot accept responsibility for artwork not retrieved on time.
Hawai‛i Craftsmen will be responsible for return shipping, including insurance damage protection up to—and no more than—$150 liability per piece with no exceptions. Artists are highly advised to provide supplemental insurance or to make alternative shipping arrangements. Return shipping carriers, including USPS, UPS, FedEx, or Young Brothers, will be chosen at the discretion of the Hawai‛i Craftsmen Board of Directors.
To ensure successful return shipment, a completed USPS return-shipping label with weight, dimensions and clearly indicated return address must accompany shipped artworks. Contact your neighbor island chairperson for further information on shipping methods, mailing labels, required forms, and packing instructions.
Hawai’i Craftsmen will not install or display any works arriving with damage. Artists shipping work should make arrangements to appropriately repair any damaged work prior to completion of installation on October 23, 2018.
An installation committee will install the artwork in the gallery. Entries that pose installation problems or cannot be installed properly may not be accepted or, if accepted, the artist may be required to help install the work. Reasonable care will be taken in handling all entries and precautions will be taken to avoid damage to the artwork. However, all entries submitted for display are at the owner’s risk.
SALES AND COMMISSIONS
Hawai’i Craftsmen encourages artists to offer their accepted entries for sale while on display. The Hawai’i Craftsmen commission for the sale of exhibited works of members is 40%; for non-members it is 50%.
