The Paseo, is an outdoor nighttime art festival set in the high desert of Taos, New Mexico now in its fourth year. The PASEO festival is dedicated to bringing the art of installation, performance and projection to the historic streets of Taos, transforming the local architechture into a magical experience and engaging the community in the art making process. The PASEO 2016 brought 8,000 people to the streets of Taos to experience this annual celebration in conjunction with the Taos Fall Arts Festival.
The Paseo Project (host organization) is seeking multimedia installation, performance, and projection art proposals for the 2017 festival. The Paseo 2017 will fill the streets of Taos Historic District, September 22 and 23, from 6:00pm to 11:00pm. The deadline for submissions is April 30, 2017.
The Paseo Project, host organization, is seeking work that is immersive, participatory, and/or will make a dynamic impact within the Taos Historic District during this evening festival. We are looking for innovative and engaging work that stimulates excitement, reflection, thought, curiosity, contemplativeness, and the whole gamut of emotions. Work must be at least one of the following: participatory, interactive, immersive and/or site-specific. Preference is given to work that engages with the architecture within the historic downtown. Work can be roving/migratory, performative, site-responsive, culturally situated, land-based or to somehow distort or disrupt scale and soundscape.
Our mission is to transform community through art, and art through community. Artist are encouraged to learn about Taos and it's unique cultural history and to integrate that with their work. Artists are encouraged to suggest collaborations with any of the following: local populations, non-profit organizations, local businesses, schools, etc.
Learn more about our community at: www.taos.org.
This is a juried and invited event with an entry fee. Local Taos artists enter for free with the code TAOSlocal. With this call, artists have the opportunity not only to be invited to present at PASEO 2017, but become eligible for invitation to opportunities for additional year-round events and collaborations.
The Paseo Project provides artist stipends and can assist with large equipment needs such as sound systems. We also have a volunteer crew that helps with temporary structures that may need to be built.
STEMarts LAB @ The PASEO Youth Program
As part of the application process new media artists are invited to submit proposals for STEMarts LAB @ The PASEO, an innovative educational program that allows middle and high schools to become part of the STEM-art making process at The PASEO. The artists are asked to share their unique process of art making with the students who then perform/install at the event. This could be an opening act, integrated into the artist work, or on a separate site.
The STEMarts LAB@The Paseo workshops can be one-day or two-day Sci-Art or STEAM workshops that incorporate exciting hands-on technologies, science, or engineering activities that are part of the artists’ work. For examples please visit the website: https://paseoproject.org/youth-programs/
If selected, artists are partnered with middle or high schools in Taos, where art and science teachers collaborate to assist the artist and enhance the STEAM (Science, technology, engineering, math + arts) component. Students work with their artist(s) up to one week prior in an experimental LAB setting which includes sharing their work live at The PASEO event along with their host(s) This real-world collaboration exposes students to critical thinking, creativity and innovation, while building valuable 21st century skills. It also brings out hundreds of families to the festival and is very much appreciated by the community.
Artist must submit lesson plan and concept for student performance/installation at the festival, as part of the general application process Stipends are available for eligible artists.
