ArtsinStark Offering $40,000 Commission for “SuperBowl III” Mural
Call for Art:
Canton, OH is the birthplace of the NFL. The ELEVEN is a public art project of ArtsinStark and The Pro Football Hall of Fame celebrating the greatest moments in professional football history. Four of the ELEVEN moments have been completed to date. ArtsinStark invites any artist over 18 years of age from Stark County, Ohio to submit concept for a $40,000 commission to design and install --- on the side of the Cultural Center for the Arts at 1001 Market Avenue North in Canton, OH --- a mural celebrating the fifth moment of The ELEVEN: Super Bowl III. The artist selected will receive $5,000 for a painting or drawing, and $35,000 for painting the mural on the wall of the building. If the winning artist is not a muralist, the artist will be paid $5,000 to create the art, and ArtsinStark will hire a mural team to do the installation. Because all applicants are being asked to submit concepts, after the winning artist is selected, ArtsinStark will also award $500 prizes to the next top five artists. All entries must be submitted by Monday April 10 at www.callforentry.org, and the mural must be installed by July 31, 2017. The sponsors of Super Bowl III are: The Deuble Foundation, The Hoover Foundation, Stark Community Foundation, and The Timken Foundation.
Why this moment is important:
The Super Bowl III moment recognizes the year that Joe Namath, star quarterback of the AFL’s New York Jets, predicted victory over the NFL’s heavily favored Baltimore Colts and --- in one of the greatest upsets in sports history --- did exactly that 16 - 7. Here is an excerpt explaining it in the Pro Football Hall of Fame’s 150 Anniversary Book:
“At the same time the league began a regular-season schedule under lights, the spotlight shined brightly on the Jets and their star quarterback, Joe Namath. The former All-America at Alabama was the media darling of New York. His signature moment came in the days leading up to Super Bowl III following the 1968 season. The confident passer was preparing to lead his Jets team against the heavily favored Baltimore Colts. After all, the NFL had dominated the AFL in the two Super Bowls to date. Namath, when questioned by reporters about the upcoming game, brashly predicted that not only would the Jets win the game, but he “guaranteed” it. In one of the greatest upsets in sports history, Namath guided the Jets to a stunning 16-7 victory. American Football League fans on hand at Miami’s Orange Bowl for the game cheered wildly with chants of “AFL, AFL, AFL!” as the clock clicked down to the final gun.”
