Overview

Like the Futurists of the early 20th century, we live in a world immersed in technology, urban trappings, speed, information, connectivity and change. Viewing it through a southern lens, tinted by tradition, can result in modern dissonance. For many, the narrative of the American South, will be informed and confined by its history, but how is its future to be portrayed? This exhibition seeks to showcase contemporary artists’ depictions of the schism and reconciliation of what might be called the New Southern Futurism.

Southern Futurism will run January 30 - April 7, 2017, with a reception held on March 25, 2017.

Jurors:

Entrepreneur Kevin Harris hails from Chicago, Illinois, where he developed his passion for the arts. Harris has received international acclaim as the Director of The Museum of Public Art. His success in bringing extraordinary artists from around the world to produce artwork in areas as economically overlooked as south Baton Rouge, Louisiana, has changed the social conversation as well as the landscape.

Ann Connelly is the Founder and Owner of Ann Connelly Fine Arts, established in 1989. Since graduating in Arts and Humanities from USL Connelly has set the bar for commercial gallery exhibitions, interior design, art consultation and civic engagement.  Connelly has a unique perspective as an Asian American raised in Louisiana who has traveled the world. She looks for the many voices where the juxtaposition of the ancient and modern coalesce.

Rodneyna Hart is Curator of The Healthcare Gallery, Exhibitions Manager at Louisiana Art & Science Museum, and Co-Curator of the Prospect.3+Baton Rouge Invitational. Hart has been strategic in the growth of the contemporary art community as an artist, administrator, arts manager, preparator and curator.
