Creative teens in grades 7-12 are invited to submit work in a number of categories of art and writing. The submissions are judged locally. 49 Writers will jury the writing entries on behalf of F Magazine, and artist/UAA art instructor Jimmy Riordan will oversee the judging of art entries.
In March, the statewide 1st, 2nd, 3rd place and honorable mention winners of the 2012 competition will have their work showcased at Out North Contemporary Art House in Anchorage, AK. Winning writers will have their work read aloud by experienced readers and actors and the entire event will be streamed online for students unable to attend. For the third year in a row, the statewide art and writing winners will be published in the April issue of F Magazine.
The F Magazine Editor's Choice Award will be awarded to one writing entrant, and one art entrant.
A Judges' Choice Scholarship Award will be awarded to one writing entrant and one art entrant. These two students will receive full scholarship and airfare for two weeks at the Sitka Fine Arts Summer Camp in Sitka, AK.
Entrants can submit up to six (6) images or writing entries per registration. To submit more, the entrant must create a new profile and pay the $5 entry fee again. Entrant cannot add or modify a submission once it is posted.
NOTE: Entrants wishing to upload images of their art must do so under "MY PROFILE".
Students that cannot afford or do not have access to funds to pay the submission fee, please let us know by emailing us directly at email@example.com; write "ASYAWC fee waiver" in the subject line.
For all entries, judges will be looking at creativity, originality, ability and overall composition.
The call for entries closes January 25; 10pm Alaska Standard Time (midnight, Mountain Standard Time).
Writing judges will make their final decisions of 1st, 2nd, 3rd place winners and runners ups no later than Jan. 30, 2013. Finalists will be contacted by Feb. 17, 2013
We are accepting art images in the following Art Categories - all are submitted under one Art Category - Art images must be uploaded under "MY PROFILE".
Art judges will make their first round of decisions by January 25, 2013. Entrants then will be requested to mail their entries to F Magazine, with a post date no later than February 4, 2013 - so be prepared! Entrants are responsible for the mailing and insuring of their art (F Magazine will be responsible for mailing and insuring the return of art).
The final round of judging for art submissions will be done no later than February 17, 2013.
Final Order of Business
All winners will be will be contacted via email, along with an invitation to the art opening and awards ceremony on March 15 & 16 (respectively). The actual placement of winners will not be revealed until the awards ceremony.
F Magazine will contact art winners and request high resolution images (at least 300 dpi) for consideration in the April publication of F Magazine by February 17. Art entrants are encouraged to gather high resolution images before sending their work to F Magazine in Anchorage. Artists will have only until February 20 to submit the high res images via email to

To be considered for the competition, students must submit a fully signed Waiver and mail it to F Magazine.

F Magazine is an Alaska-based arts and culture publication. An Art House Resident Group of Out North Contemporary Art House, F Magazine is entirely volunteer owned and run. The mission of F Magazine is to bolster arts consciousness in Alaska by bridging the gap between artists and the general public.
F Magazine LLC, in conjunction with fhideout.org and Out North Contemporary Art House, hosts a number of different annual competitions. These competitions are designed to raise visibility of Alaska's arts, increase community engagement of the arts, and encourage artists to raise their own bar.
