We are thrilled to announce the 2014 Pacific Northwest Plein Air Exhibition.  This year, we are celebrating 10 years of showcasing art created en plein air in the Columbia River Gorge.

The Columbia River Gorge is a Plein Air Painter’s Paradise.  Each year, artists gather to take in the stunning beauty of its black basalt cliffs, ribbon-like waterfalls, and lush fir forests.  In November 1986, Congress recognized the unique beauty of the Gorge when it made it the nation's first National Scenic Area.

Our exhibition is unique in that plein air painters are joined by writers, both seeking inspiration in the great outdoors. The show begins with a three-day paint-out and culminates in a month long exhibition at the Columbia Center for the Arts. In honor of our 10th anniversary, we are introducing a Quick Draw event at our local farmer’s market and new prize, the Bobbie Rosemont Quick Draw Prize for $1000. We are also excited to announce this year’s Plein Air juror: Kathryn Stats.

This year, certain details have changed and are bolded.

Martin Luther King, Jr. Career Center CTE Renovation 2014

Deadline:  Friday, April 20, 2014

Amount of Commission:  $28,000

Eligibility:  Alaskan Artists Only; past King Career Center students preferred

The school’s renovation project was completed in 2013, so the art selection jury requires artwork to be installed no later than to December 2014.

Site Description

The art selection jury intends to commission one artwork to be permanently installed in the remodeled school which is located on 2650 East Northern Lights Boulevard.  The jury has prioritized an area in the newly remodeled school for installation of artwork.

The art location is a concrete block wall on the main level of the school near a central hub of the school building.  There is space for artwork on the south and east walls adjacent to the entrance of the welding and carpentry classrooms.  The south wall measures approximately 18 feet long and 3 foot 6 inches tall with a small area on the upper right corner of the wall that measures 1 foot 8 inches tall by 5 feet wide that needs to be reserved for classroom identification.

The location extends on the east wall perpendicular to the south wall and leading down the hallway to the classrooms.  The east wall measures 24 feet in length and varies from 3 foot 6 inches tall to 5 foot 6 inches tall near the entrance to the construction trades area.  Please review the attached drawings for more information.

The theme of the proposed artwork should be centered in the construction trades including welding, carpentry, and construction electricity and the art selection jury is interested in involving students in the project, if possible.
