GENERATIONS: 40 HUES BETWEEN BLACK AND WHITE

Curators: Dinh Q. Le and Stephen Anderson

Exhibition Dates: December 5 - 19, 2015

Venues: OCCCA and VAALA Cultural Center
 www.occca.org and www.vaala.org

About the theme:

This year marks the fortieth anniversary of the beginning of the exodus of over a million Vietnamese people to other countries for political, economic, and other reasons following the end of the Vietnam conflict. For some, the irrevocable changes that accompanied the conflict’s end resulted in the loss of a way of life. For others, it ushered in new beginnings. And for many, both were equally true.

This exhibition aims to present a survey of the thematic concerns of artists of Vietnamese heritage AND artists inspired by Vietnam over the past forty years. Themes such as change, displacement, identity, and memory are particularly relevant. By presenting many “hues” of artworks, we hope to express the multiplicity of generations of artists and viewpoints, and to counter black-or-white, good-or-bad judgment and politics. Works of art produced in any media since 1975 will be considered.

“I leave you my portrait so that you will have my presence all the days and nights that I am away from you.”
Frida Kahlo

Artists have created self portraits for centuries—in part to ensure presence in their absence.

In My Absence asks artists to share the impression they believe, hope or fear that they leave on those around them. Whether in your most deeply bonded relationships or within a passing interaction with strangers—what fundamental quality or qualities do you bring to the space and subsequently leave in the minds of others.

uBe Art wants to know, who are you in this world?

The Joshua Tree Highlands Artist Residency provides artists from around the world seven weeks of uninterrupted time and space in the inspiring desert environment surrounding Joshua Tree National Park.  It’s an opportunity for painters, sculptors, photographers, writers and musicians to have a full block of time to focus on their work without the distractions of day to day schedules, jobs or family.  The residency bestows each artist with a place to live, a full studio to work in and a stipend to offset travel costs.

The residency encourages the exchange of creative ideas by connecting visiting artists with local artists from the community.  We arrange gatherings, exhibitions, field trips, educational outreach and workshops. This not only benefits the artist, but also the cultural life of the rural gateway communities to the Joshua Tree National Park making international artists and their work accessible to the local residents. It complements the local arts community and adds vitality to the whole region.

Since 2001, a total of 60 accomplished artists, writers, and composers have participated in the Artist-in-Residence program at Denali National Park and Preserve, Alaska. Following a 10-day residency, each volunteers to lead a public outreach activity with visitors and to donate one piece of finished artwork to the program collection. For a two-year trial period beginning with this open call for residencies in 2016, the program will explore a preference for digital and performance-based donations rather than physical pieces for the program collection. Artists are challenged to create artwork and activities for visitors that offer a fresh and innovative perspective of the park drawn from their own experience.

In recent years, the program has expanded opportunities for artists to include a winter residency program and a dedicated residency in music composition. A first fine arts photographer was selected to participate as a visual artist in 2015. Each summer, greater direct interaction between artists and the visiting public now takes place through afternoon outreach activities in public spaces outside the Denali Visitor Center.

With the welcome addition of a new interactive iBook catalog and several new gallery spaces, artwork donated to the program collection enjoys a larger life in the public eye. Current gallery spaces include the Denali Visitor Center, Eielson Visitor Center, Murie Science and Learning Center, and  the Walter Harper Talkeetna Ranger Station, as well as Alaska Public Lands Information Centers in Anchorage and Fairbanks.

Transforming: Street Objects from Your Street to Main Street

Found and/or Transformed: Reimagining the Streets

 International Juried Art Exhibition NYC

November 24–December 22, 2015

What if we could reimagine or transform everyday objects into something remarkable and different, even if only for a brief moment?

We invite artists to submit images of found or created temporary outdoor sculptures made with objects on the streets of their own communities. By witnessing and documenting through the camera lens, these images present the everyday in a new conceptual light. Original objects privately owned or city sanctioned may not be damaged or permanently altered in any way and must be left in original condition.

Please submit your work as A4 or (8.5”x11”) or A3 (11”x17”) digital print.

In August 2014, Independent Curator Kimberly Marrero presented her project Transforming NYC Street Objects which invited New Yorkers the rare opportunity to transform their local communities into a formal work of art. The call resulted in thousands of submissions. New Yorkers responded with brilliant compositions using NYC as their backdrop. Due to its great success the curator and Site:Brooklyn are now taking this project global. We are inviting a broader audience to transform their own communities into a work of art.
