Whatever this indefinable quality is that really makes a face, we invite you to explore it.  For our "Faces" exhibit, we want to showcase every subtlety of the face that can possibly be expressed through the medium of your choice.

Crooked Tree Arts Center-Traverse City proudly announces the 4th Annual Art and the Garden.   The summer of 2015 will be filled with arts events centered on the theme of Art and the Garden including a Juried Exhibit, Paint Out, two Coffee @ Ten lectures, Swirl, Member’s Reception, Artist Forum and other special events.  Over $3,000 in cash and awards will be presented.

The theme for the show is a liberal and open representation of “the garden.”   Artists are encouraged to enter work based on broad garden themes or those specific to the site of the Botanic Garden on the property of the old State Hospital in Traverse City, now part of the Historic Barns Park project.

From meditation labyrinths to Japanese stone gardens, plants and gardens play an important part in our well-being.  A garden might serve as a tranquil retreat or private escape from the demands of everyday life.  Watching a butterfly or frog may be a reminder of cycles in nature.  For centuries, human beings have found ways to relate to nature.  For this exhibition, Crooked Tree Arts Center is looking for your distinctive interpretation on the theme of gardens to share representations, abstractions, feelings, or moods.

City: Overland Park
State: Kansas
Event Dates: 2/26/14 - 2/26/14
Entry Deadline: 4/15/15
Days remaining to deadline: 40

Project Overview

The City of Overland Park is seeking an artist or artists to install two installations on each of two roundabouts within a high profile mixed use development. The two locations are traffic island roundabouts. Both sites require proposals that can be appreciated in not only 360 degrees but in all light conditions and all seasons. When possible the City prefers installations that reflect the culture, history, people and values of our community. Ideally the two sculpture sites would be compatible with each other and the surrounding development.

Proposals will reviewed by the Public Art Master Plan Committee, hereafter referred to as the selection committee, a body of volunteers comprised of artist experts, residents and stakeholders to determine a recommendation for the City Governing Body. Ultimately, the City of Overland Park Governing Body has final authority of all decisions of art acquisitions.

Roundabout #1 is 100’ in diameter. Roundabout #2 is 76’ in diameter. The City expects that both installations will not have the same scale, neither will the sites have the same budget, nor is it required that one artist manage both installations. Artists may apply for both locations in which case the sites must be compatible with each other. However, if two separate proposals are selected, it is incumbent on the selection committee to demonstrate compatibility between the two proposals.

Entry Deadline: 6/15/15
Days remaining to deadline: 101

The Athenaeum Invitational celebrates the arts of Virginia, Maryland, and District of Columbia in the Athenaeum Gallery in Alexandria, VA. It is a theme-based event featuring the works of both specially-invited artists who have exhibited in the Athenaeum Gallery in the past, as well as works selected through a call for submissions open to anyone living or working in Virginia, the District of Columbia, or Maryland.  A $1500 prize for the best work will be awarded to an invited artist, and a $1000 prize will be awarded to an artist from the open call. The show is juried by Athenaeum Gallery Director, Twig Murray.  Prize winners will be selected by Jack Rasmussen, Director and Curator of the American University Museum at the Katzen Center in Washington, DC.

Theme

Cole Porter’s 1934 song, “Don’t Fence Me In” serves as the inspiration for this year’s Athenaeum Invitational.  Beginning with a sheriff threatening to send him to jail,  ‘Wildcat Willie’s’ response forms the base of the song.  It is a heartfelt and sentimental paean to great expanses of the wild west and open space – and portrays an abiding hatred of being fenced in. When sung by Roy Rogers in the 1944 movie, Hollywood Canteen, it embodies stereotypical movie cowboy-ness.  Also taking it at face value, Bing Crosby and the Andrews Sisters also made popular recordings in the forties.  More recently artists including Willie Nelson and Leon Russell, David Byrne, and Chumbawumba have made all kinds of creative covers.  The Athenaeum encourages artists to search out a number of covers of the song.

Artists are asked to respond to or reflect on “Don’t Fence Me In” in a creative and aesthetically excellent manner.
