Orange County Center for Contemporary art (OCCCA) & Vietnamese Arts and Letters Association (VAALA) Call for Art:

GENERATIONS: 40 HUES BETWEEN BLACK AND WHITE

Curators: Dinh Q. Le and Stephen Anderson

Exhibition Dates: December 5 - 19, 2015

Venues: OCCCA and VAALA Cultural Center
 www.occca.org and www.vaala.org

About the theme:

This year marks the fortieth anniversary of the beginning of the exodus of over a million Vietnamese people to other countries for political, economic, and other reasons following the end of the Vietnam conflict. For some, the irrevocable changes that accompanied the conflict’s end resulted in the loss of a way of life. For others, it ushered in new beginnings. And for many, both were equally true.

This exhibition aims to present a survey of the thematic concerns of artists of Vietnamese heritage AND artists inspired by Vietnam over the past forty years. Themes such as change, displacement, identity, and memory are particularly relevant. By presenting many “hues” of artworks, we hope to express the multiplicity of generations of artists and viewpoints, and to counter black-or-white, good-or-bad judgment and politics. Works of art produced in any media since 1975 will be considered.

IMPLICIT BIAS – Seeing the Other: Seeing Our Self

"Maybe, we now realize the way racial bias can infect us, even when we don’t realize it. So we are guarding against, not just racial slurs, but we are also guarding against the subtle impulse to call Johnny back for a job interview, but not Jamal."President Barak Obama’s Charleston eulogy at the funeral of the Rev. Clementa Pinckney

IMPLICIT BIAS Seeing the Other: Seeing Our Self  This exhibition seeks to explore the unconscious racial bias that affects our decisions, choices, friends and beliefs about others. The growing body of social science research suggests that each of us harbors unconscious beliefs and values about race (as well as gender, age, etc.) that are often at odds with our conscious beliefs about our values.  At the heart of discrimination lie powerful unacknowledged biases about the Other, which affect our decisions and choices, and all too often have adverse affects on the lives of others.

With this emotionally charged subject matter, we want work that squarely addresses the issues of racial disparity in our country, as well as work that helps us visualize what an equitable future might look like.   We’re looking for work that addresses the need for greater self-awareness about our own biases, beliefs and consequent actions.

The work does not need to solely imply an introspective view of Bias, but can extend to more prevalent matters, such as injustice in all its forms; police, judicial, education, voting rights and urban planning for example.

We are living in important and dangerous times, where racial bias has stepped into a place that can no longer be ignored by the powers that be. IMPLICIT BIAS - Seeing the Other: Seeing Ones Self is an exhibit that wants to reflect these matters with honesty, integrity and an urgency these times deserve.

ELIGIBILITY:
The exhibition is open to artists from the Washington, DC Greater Metropolitan, Virginia and Maryland.

Since 2001, a total of 60 accomplished artists, writers, and composers have participated in the Artist-in-Residence program at Denali National Park and Preserve, Alaska. Following a 10-day residency, each volunteers to lead a public outreach activity with visitors and to donate one piece of finished artwork to the program collection. For a two-year trial period beginning with this open call for residencies in 2016, the program will explore a preference for digital and performance-based donations rather than physical pieces for the program collection. Artists are challenged to create artwork and activities for visitors that offer a fresh and innovative perspective of the park drawn from their own experience.

In recent years, the program has expanded opportunities for artists to include a winter residency program and a dedicated residency in music composition. A first fine arts photographer was selected to participate as a visual artist in 2015. Each summer, greater direct interaction between artists and the visiting public now takes place through afternoon outreach activities in public spaces outside the Denali Visitor Center.

With the welcome addition of a new interactive iBook catalog and several new gallery spaces, artwork donated to the program collection enjoys a larger life in the public eye. Current gallery spaces include the Denali Visitor Center, Eielson Visitor Center, Murie Science and Learning Center, and  the Walter Harper Talkeetna Ranger Station, as well as Alaska Public Lands Information Centers in Anchorage and Fairbanks.

Women & Their Work seeks artists who create inventive, high-caliber contemporary art that breaks new ground or proposes innovative approaches to form and content. Selections are based on an evaluation of the work; we look for a strong, consistent aesthetic vision. We encourage artists to create new work for exhibition. The work in the application should demonstrate that you are capable in vision and scope of creating a powerful solo exhibition that commands the 1,700 square foot gallery. Women artists residing in Texas who have not had a solo exhibition at Women & Their Work within the past five years are eligible. Recently created work in all media will be considered.
