City of Chicago: Greater Grand Crossing Branch Library

The City of Chicago Department of Cultural Affairs and Special Events (DCASE), working with the Chicago Public Library invites professional artists to submit their interest in a public art commission for the new Greater Grand Crossing Branch Library. This commission opportunity is to create a site-specific artwork that responds to the community’s clearly stated desire that the public art for their library be reflective of intellectual curiosity, creativity and a thirst for knowledge expressed in a visually sophisticated manner. Uniquely, this library is a partner in Pocket Con, a comic conference held in the neighborhood for Chicago teens and focusing on underrepresented populations in the comic genre. The local youth and parent awareness of Anime and graphic novels is high. All media will be considered but it is essential that it have low maintenance requirements. The panel has identified the large wall in the main entry and the “frieze band” wall sections immediately over the bookshelves in the Reading Room as primary sites for consideration. There is also an outdoor reading garden. Artists may propose for any public area of the library and grounds. The panel will select semi-finalists in June 2015 who will be paid honoraria to develop proposals by September with finalist being selected in October. Installation by the commissioned finalist is expected within one year of contracting.

Timetable:

RFI due in CAFÉ by June 14, midnight CST.

Semi-finalists selected in July.

Proposals due in September.

Finalist selected by October.

Total project budget: $44,335.00

Application deadline: 11:59pm CST, June 14, 2015

Please note: If you have previously submitted materials to DCASE’s Artist Registry, you still need to apply to this call in order to be considered for the opportunity at Greater Grand Crossing Branch Library. DCASE’s Public Art Program reserves the right to commission artists who do not apply.

OFF THE GRID

Historically, the horizontal and vertical lines of the grid can be traced to the spatial development of ancient Greece, Egypt, and China. Politically, utilized as a normative tool to create order, it also has been conceived at the same time as an autonomous, autotelic, and austere space of modernity, "abrogating the claims of natural objects to have an order particular to themselves" (Rosalind Krauss).   Contemporary art has both extended and/or undermined this conception of the modernist grid as pure visual structure and, at bottom, a masculine construct.

Off the Grid will present works of art that offer alternative ways of engaging the grid, challenging its discursive and conceptual confines and liberating its structural coordinates through form, color, tone and concept.

Event Dates: 9/10/15 - 10/25/15
Entry Deadline: 6/15/15
Days remaining to deadline: 49

The Athenaeum Invitational celebrates the arts of Virginia, Maryland, and District of Columbia in the Athenaeum Gallery in Alexandria, VA. It is a theme-based event featuring the works of both specially-invited artists who have exhibited in the Athenaeum Gallery in the past, as well as works selected through a call for submissions open to anyone living or working in Virginia, the District of Columbia, or Maryland.  A $1500 prize for the best work will be awarded to an invited artist, and a $1000 prize will be awarded to an artist from the open call. The show is juried by Athenaeum Gallery Director, Twig Murray.  Prize winners will be selected by Jack Rasmussen, Director and Curator of the American University Museum at the Katzen Center in Washington, DC.

Theme

Cole Porter’s 1934 song, “Don’t Fence Me In” serves as the inspiration for this year’s Athenaeum Invitational.  Beginning with a sheriff threatening to send him to jail,  ‘Wildcat Willie’s’ response forms the base of the song.  It is a heartfelt and sentimental paean to great expanses of the wild west and open space – and portrays an abiding hatred of being fenced in. When sung by Roy Rogers in the 1944 movie, Hollywood Canteen, it embodies stereotypical movie cowboy-ness.  Also taking it at face value, Bing Crosby and the Andrews Sisters also made popular recordings in the forties.  More recently artists including Willie Nelson and Leon Russell, David Byrne, and Chumbawumba have made all kinds of creative covers.  The Athenaeum encourages artists to search out a number of covers of the song.

Artists are asked to respond to or reflect on “Don’t Fence Me In” in a creative and aesthetically excellent manner.
