Mark making is an integral part of the creative process and the evidence of the artist’ hand is always exciting to see.  The most successful works seem to be enlivened by these marks (whether abstract or representational).   This call emphasizes the process with a focus on the individual style of the art maker (whether impassioned, studied, or subdued).  What kind of marks and/or mediums do you use to lead to great results?  What is your personal interpretation of this metaphoric or symbolic vehicle, “The Living Mark”.  How do you use the Living Mark in your work?  We welcome the chance to review the mark you make.

In celebration of Denali National Park and Preserve's Centennial anniversary in 2017, the park is seeking a diverse suite of voices to help share the unique story of Denali through art. Alaska Native artists and artists between the ages of 16 and 25 are strongly encouraged to apply.

The Artist-in-Residence program is dedicated to exploring new ways for visitors to experience Denali. From hundreds of competitive applications each year, about a half-dozen accomplished artists, writers, and composers are invited by the park superintendent to spend ten days in Denali at their own expense the following winter or summer. Visits include a permit for limited access along the Denali Park Road and time alone at a historic ranger patrol cabin.

Each participant volunteers to lead a public outreach activity with visitors and to donate a finished work to the program collection. Artists are challenged to create works for visitors that convey a fresh and innovative perspective of Denali drawn from direct experience. With the welcome addition of several year-round gallery spaces beyond park boundaries, more of these donated works enjoy a larger life in the public eye.

Costs of program operations and collateral-duty staffing are supported by visitor entry fees. Costs of supplies for free outreach activities are provided by Alaska Geographic with funds derived from purchases at park bookstores.

ArtWorks and Brewery District Community Urban Redevelopment Corporation are partnering to add more public art along the Brewing Heritage Trail the Northern Liberties neighborhood.
We are commissioning up to 12 different artists to create contemporary works of art that illuminate the historical Brewing Heritage Trail.
This project is an exciting opportunity ArtWorks and the Brewery District Community Urban Redevelopment Corporation want to provide artists with full artistic freedom of subject matter and materials used within the theme. Each work of art will be created using a different medium, but all subject matter will be a positive tribute to Cincinnati Brewing history, industry, culture, and tradition.
The idea is to place the installations in such a way that they also serve as trail markers and the viewer is encouraged to seek each of them out, thus simultaneously discovering more about the Brewing Heritage Trail and exploring the neighborhood in a new way.
The project provides an opportunity for the residents, business owners, and visitors of the Northern Liberties, and other select communities, to engage with one another, and the city at large.

Entry Deadline: 8/28/16
Days remaining to deadline: 119

Underwritten by TTR | Sotheby's International Realty, The Athenaeum Invitational celebrates the arts of Virginia, Maryland, the District of Columbia and West Virginia in the Athenaeum Gallery in Alexandria, VA. It is a theme-based event featuring the works of both specially-invited artists who have exhibited in the Athenaeum Gallery in the past, as well as works selected through a call for submissions open to anyone living or working in Virginia, the District of Columbia, or Maryland.  A $1500 prize for the best work will be awarded to an invited artist, and a $1000 prize will be awarded to an artist from the open call. The show is juried by Athenaeum Gallery Director, Twig Murray.  Prize winners will be selected by a noted art expert, who has yet to be determined.

Theme: Oh! The joy!
The theme asks artists to reflect on a moment of pure joy. It is inspired by the Lewis and Clark expedition across the unchartered North American continent to reach the Pacific Ocean. After an arduous, two-year trek, William Lewis crested a hill, saw the vast body of water and cried, “The Ocean in view. Oh! The joy!”

Entries might explore that singular burst of relief and satisfaction after enduring a difficult task, or the magic of being struck by something unexpected and delightful, or the sudden transformation that is experienced in sheer ebullience. It is the ephemeral and evanescent quality of a joyous moment we invite artists to respond to.

All entries must include a brief statement discussing how the work of art relates to the theme.
