About Year In Review:
Americans for the Arts Public Art Network (PAN) announces the Call for Submissions for the 2010 Year in Review. Submitted public art projects will be reviewed and selected by this year's curators, artists Fred Wilson and Helen Lessick.

Since 2000, the Public Art Network Year in Review has annually recognized outstanding public art projects through an open call submission and curation selection process. The Year in Review program is the ONLY national award that specifically recognizes public art projects. Both temporary and permanent public art is eligible. The field is advanced by the commitment of artists to produce exceptional work, public art administrators who lead and facilitate public processes, and our two independent curators, all of whom dedicate time and thoughtful detail.

On behalf of PAN and our 2010 curators, we look forward to viewing the creative and exemplary new public art works of 2009.

Application Deadline: Midnight (11:59:59 PM) Mountain Time, Friday, March 26, 2010

For information on how to apply via CaFÉ, please see the submission requirements listed below.

Projects selected by the reviewers of the 2010 Year in Review will be presented at the national Americans for the Arts Public Art Preconference 'Redefining the Public Paradigm' which will be held in Baltimore, June 23-25, 2010.

Following selection, the Year in Review projects are compiled on CD and provide an exceptional educational tool for communities developing and advocating for public art programs and projects. The 2010 Year In Review CD will be available at the conference and in the Americans for the Arts bookstore.

About the Curators
Each year, two arts professionals are selected to review and present projects for inclusion in the Year In Review. This year, projects will be selected and presented by artists, Fred Wilson and Helen Lessick.

Fred Wilson,
Fred Wilson's work has been featured in more than 100 group exhibitions, including the 50th Venice Biennale (2003) as the American representative, the Whitney Museum of American Art Biennial Exhibition (1993), and the 4th International Cairo Biennale (1992). He has had more than 25 solo museum exhibitions internationally, and has been the recipient of numerous honors and awards. Among them, the John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation Award (the "Genius Grant"), Chicago (1999). PAN is pleased to welcome Wilson's return to Baltimore where his seminal exhibition 'Mining the Museum' initiated a genre of work examining the cultural roles of museums. He is currently working a public art work 'E Pluribus Unum' for the Cultural Trail in Indianapolis. The artist currently lives and works in New York City.

Helen Lessick
Helen Lessick is an artist, arts administrator, and cultural activist with broad national experience. Her practice unites the perspectives of working artist, art program manager, and civic advocate. Born and raised in Philadelphia and educated in the American West, Helen has worked on staff, as a consultant, and as a contracted public artist. She has served on recognized state, county, city, and transit agency programs and consulted on civic art policies and procedures for varied municipal clients. Helen brings a national vision to every aspect of her work, influenced by participation in permanent and temporary art programs in New York City, Portland, Seattle, Houston, Reno, and Los Angeles. Her interests are temporary projects, commission contracts and opportunities, civic art collection management, and unifying studio and public art practices. Currently in fabrication for a public art project, Helen maintains her studio and consultant practice in Los Angeles.

About the Application Process
Applicants must submit a separate application for each project they would like considered for the 2010 Year In Review. Each application must be submitted via the CaFÉ™ web site and must include:

1) – Six (6) Digital images of the completed public art project.
Each application must include EXACTLY six images of the public art project. The reviewers will view images in two groups of three images.

Do not submit jpeg images gridded in montage format. One image per jpeg file. One project per application submission. If you wish to show a close-up or detail, include it within the required six images.

Instructions on how to format images to CaFE specifications can be found at www.callforentry.org/imaging_tips.phtml.

2) – Project Description
The project description provides an opportunity for the commissioning agency and/or artist to provide a verbal narrative that further describes the project depicted in the six submitted digital images. This description should be no more than 150 words. Please write your project description in a separate word processing software application and cut and paste the description into the application form in CaFE. Please spell-check your project description - if your project is selected, it will be published as-is, 150-word limit, in the 2010 Year in Review CD and presented at the Americans for the Arts Public Art Preconference.

3) - Artist(s) and Project Information
The application requires the artist(s) name(s), commissioning entity and contact info for both parties. Additional project information required includes: project title, location, materials, and budget. Applications that fail to include this information will be ineligible for consideration.

There are no limits to the number of projects applicants may submit. Applicants must create a separate CaFÉ profile for each project submitted. In order to be able to easily track and manage your CaFÉ profiles associated with each application, you may want to select usernames that correspond with the project, for example “mosaic,” "plazasculpture,” etc., and use the same password for each profile.

• Many artists have already registered and uploaded images of their work into CaFÉ. For ease of technical submission, agencies and artists are STRONGLY encouraged to work together to submit an application.

NOTE: No slides will be accepted. For kinetic, new media or video based art, DVD's may be submitted my mail to accompany applications. Two DVD's must be labeled with full project information and sent to:

How do I submit my projects call for entry application for the 2010 Year in Review?

CaFE™ allows you to create a profile and secure login for each project you want to enter for the 2010 Year in Review call for entry. In addition, it allows you to upload digital image files in a consistent format for each project. Your completed application is submitted electronically, eliminating the need for hard copy material, SASE, postage, etc.

Helpful Application Tips:

Each project must be submitted as a single application. Each application requires a unique profile and login. We recommend that if you submit more than one project for consideration that you use the name of each project as the username and your name or agency acronym as your password. You may use the same password for different profiles. For example:

Project 1 - Username: mosaic
Password: MAA

Project 2 - Username: plazasculpture
Password: MAA

How To Begin:

1. Register and create your login and core profile for the first project for which you will be applying. This profile should correspond with the artist and/or organization associated with the project application.

2. Upload the 6 images related to the first project in the “Manage Images” space.

3. Complete the application questions in “Apply to Calls”.

4. Finally, “Checkout”. You will be given a chance to review your application or re-order images before you finalize the checkout process.

A confirmation receipt will be emailed to you after submission of an application. Keep this as a record of your submission. If you do not receive confirmation, make sure that you’ve checked out completely and check your email folders for the confirmation receipt. There is no fee to apply.

Repeat steps 1 through 4 for each project you want to enter for the 2010 Year in Review submission.
