Sponsored by the Central Pennsylvania Festival of the Arts, Images has evolved into a well-respected show for both emerging and established artists. The Central Pennsylvania Festival of the Arts was founded in 1966 by Penn State University’s College of Arts and Architecture and the State College Chamber of Commerce. Drawing over 125,000 people to State College each summer, the Festival includes our nationally recognized Sidewalk Sale and Exhibition, a gallery exhibition, an Italian Street Painting Festival, Children and Youth Day, educational opportunities, and music, dance and theatrical performances in a variety of traditional and non-traditional venues. MISSION STATEMENT The mission of the Central Pennsylvania Festival of the Arts is to celebrate the arts with presentations of diverse, high quality visual and performing arts through the cooperative volunteer support of the community and the Pennsylvania State University. The essence of this organization is the enrichment and education of the audience grounded in personal interaction between artist and audience. CALENDAR Fee and application deadline: March 26, 2010 Notification mailed: April 5, 2010 Accepted entries due: May 12 – May 15, 2010 Exhibition dates: June 9 - July 11, 2010 Return of work by shipment: July 23, 2010 LOCATION The exhibition will be in the Robeson Gallery in the HUB-Robeson Center on the University Park campus of The Pennsylvania State University. JUROR Dan Mills is an artist and the Director of the Samek Art Gallery at Bucknell University in Lewisburg, PA. He has held this position since 2001. As the director of Samek Art Gallery, Mills organizes its nationally recognized exhibitions program that 'brings the world to Bucknell.' He also oversees the gallery’s permanent collection, organizes programming for the university and regional community. Mills has curated numerous major thematic group exhibitions, and in-depth solo exhibitions that have been presented at museums in New York, Chicago, Los Angeles and throughout the US. These include Regeneration: Contemporary Chinese Art From China and the US, Agnes Denes: Projects For Public Spaces, and Issues of Identity in Recent American Art. A frequent lecturer, juror, panelist and guest critic, Mills has presented lectures on a variety of topics at universities and museums throughout the US, and has juried college, regional and national exhibitions, and served as a reviewer for regional and state artist fellowships. Mills is on the board of the Association of College and University Museums and Galleries. Mills exhibits his own work extensively. Recent solo shows include Meditations on Empire, Tianjin Academy of Fine Arts Museum, China; US Future States Atlas, Sherry Frumkin Gallery, Santa Monica, CA; and American Icons & Morphs, Zolla/Lieberman Gallery, Chicago. His work has been included in exhibitions at institutions including the Chicago Cultural Center, Chicago; China Art Archives & Warehouse, Beijing; Everson Museum of Art, Syracuse, NY; Pratt Manhattan Gallery, New York; Vanderbilt University Fine Arts Gallery, Nashville, TN. The book Dan Mills: The US Future States Atlas was published by Perceval Press 2009. AWARDS A minimum of $3,000 will be awarded, without regard to medium. There will be one Best of Show Award and five Merit awards. The Revington Arthur Foundation sponsors an award for Excellence in Painting and the Viewer’s Choice Award. The juror will make prize decisions on site shortly before the opening of the exhibition. CATALOG and SALES An illustrated online catalog of the exhibition will be published by the CPFA as a page of the Festival’s web site. It will contain the images from the exhibit and a juror’s statement. The Festival will also publish a paper gallery guide to the exhibition. The Robeson Gallery does not charge a sales commission. FESTIVAL EYES We strive to make the CPFA accessible to all. Trained docents from the Sight Loss Support Group of Central Pennsylvania, Inc. will guide visually impaired persons through Images 2010 as part of the Festival Eyes program, recognized by the Pennsylvania Council on the Arts as a model program for accessibility in the arts. Visually impaired visitors experience Images 2010 through verbal descriptions and/or guided touch. Please check box on entry form to participate in the Festival Eyes program. CONDITIONS FOR ENTRY Images 2010 is open to artists residing in Pennsylvania, New York, New Jersey, Delaware, Maryland, Virginia, West Virginia, Ohio, and the District of Columbia. Digital images of original work produced within the last three years may be submitted. Images 2010 will exhibit drawings, paintings, mixed media, photography, hand-pulled prints, watercolors, fiber, ceramic, paper, and sculpture in any medium. Sculpture must be no heavier than 150 pounds. A $30 non-refundable entry fee must accompany each online application. Entry fees are used to offset the cost of the exhibition. Only complete applications submitted before midnight MST March 26, 2010 will be considered. The work will be judged on the basis of digital images. A maximum of three images may be entered, one per artwork, except for those entering in fiber and sculpture. Fiber artists and sculptors may submit a second image, such as a detail shot, or a side view, along with an overall view of each artwork. Should artists in categories other than fiber or sculpture submit more than three images per entry, the additional images will not be juried. Notification Artists will be notified regarding their applications on April 5, 2010. Results will not be given over the telephone. Delivery and Return of Work Upon notification of acceptance, work must be shipped or mailed in prepaid, sturdy reusable crates to arrive between May 12 to May 15, 2010. Neither the Pennsylvania State University nor the Central Pennsylvania Festival of the Arts will be responsible for any damage occurring in transit. Work cannot be picked up before the closing of the show. I about July 23, 2010. Artists who leave work at the gallery after July 31 will be charged a daily storage fee. We will ship C.O.D. by the same carrier whenever possible. Do not send prepaid postage. All artwork must be identified with the artist’s name. Work shall be framed, wired, and ready to hang. The CPFA reserves all rights to exclude any work when the work differs from the slide entry. Insurance and Liability All works will be insured for their sale price as declared by the artist, while in care of the Pennsylvania State University. Once declared, this value cannot be changed. Neither Penn State nor the CPFA will be responsible for works not claimed by 6:00 p.m. on July 31, 2010, (except in the case of shipped works). Consent to reproduce images of artists’ work for publicity, catalog, or educational purposes is assumed, unless specifically reserved in writing. Submission of entry constitutes agreement to all conditions in this prospectus. |
