REQUIREMENTS: Images: 10 Request for Qualifications Downtown Lexington Public Art Initiative Leadership Lexington, Class of 2010 Project Summary: Leadership Lexington Class of 2010 is initiating a national invitation and selection process for public art that will produce a portfolio of up to five production-ready proposals for exterior artwork to be permanently installed in downtown Lexington. Through a two-stage process of Request for Qualifications and a follow-up Request for Proposals, we will generate: A) national interest in public art in Lexington Kentucky B) public interest and input from Lexingtonians C) a list of site-specific publicly-vetted proposals that can be commissioned as soon as funding is secured D) a template for public input and professional oversight for all aesthetic improvements to our urban streetscape. Phase I: Request for Qualifications The downtown Lexington public art RFQ seeks all qualified artists with the experience and capacity to produce permanent artwork for the urban streetscape that can be produced and installed at a cost not to exceed $150,000 per artwork. After a thorough review of submissions by a jury assembled by Leadership Lexington, a collection of no more than 20 artists will be publicly exhibited and reviewed. Any or all submitted materials may be reproduced and exhibited as a part of this initiative. Up to five artists from the RFQ submissions will be selected as candidates for the Request for Proposals. Guiding criteria for selection (not all are required or prioritized): • Artistic distinction • Changeability/interactivity with public or natural elements • Sound or acoustic qualities • Low maintenance, durability • Resonance with Lexington’s unique history and heritage • Contextual integration into a specific urban site and its intrinsic character Phase II: Request for Proposals After a thorough review of all qualified RFQs, up to five artists will be invited to participate in a Request for Proposals for specific public artwork for downtown Lexington. Proposals are expected to represent a unique commission in ample detail and be provided in a format that may be exhibited in a gallery setting (more details will be provided with the invitation to RFP). Each artist will be awarded $2,000 upon receipt of qualifying submissions. There is a travel allowance of up to $600 per finalist. Completed proposals will be assembled as a portfolio to be published and exhibited by Leadership Lexington or related public entity for the purpose of promoting public art in Lexington and raising public awareness and funds to support the production of permanent installations. Submitted materials will become the property of Leadership Lexington. Successful proposals will be expected to provide: • A working familiarity with Lexington and its urban areas; • A written document expressing the conceptual framework and artistic point of view that will guide development of the project; • A timeline and budget for production and installation; • An estimate of replacement, routine maintenance or repair; Evaluation: All submissions will be reviewed by Leadership Lexington, arts professionals, civic leaders and representatives of the community. Known in the nineteenth century as the “Athens of the West” for its culture and learning, Lexington’s region today boasts eighteen institutions of higher learning and a thriving music and art scene. It is a pastoral university city encircled by farms, racetracks, bourbon distilleries, and the palisaded Kentucky River. It was the first city of America’s pioneer west, and today it remains the hub of Kentucky’s Bluegrass region and Appalachian mountains. In recent years, Lexington has seen a dramatic revitalization of its historic downtown. The public art initiative seeks to build upon this very positive momentum. This fall, as the ‘Horse Capital of the World’, Lexington will play host to the 2010 Alltech FEI World Equestrian Games at the Kentucky Horse Park, where thousands of the world’s top equestrian athletes will compete over a three week period.
