Project mission and background
The Sustainability Commission of the City of Palm Springs invites both amateur and professional photographers to submit images to be considered for a juried show entitled, “Earth Through a Lens”. The show is an integral part of the City’s celebration of the 40th annual Earth Day. The purpose of the show is to underscore the need to improve stewardship of the earth in order to create a sustainable environment. This goal will be realized by exhibiting as many as 30 large format photographs that focus on (a) the natural beauty of the earth (b) degradation of the environment by mankind’s activity and (c) attempts at restoration of the environment. Entrants should pay close attention to the subcategories listed below. Entries will be judged both on relevance to the show’s goal and artistic accomplishment. The top entries will for displayed within storefronts along world renowned Palm Canyon Drive for the month of April, 2010. The top prize winners, to be announced on Earth Day, April 22, 2010, will receive prizes of $1,500, $1,000, and $500 + travel stipend to attend the awards ceremony in Palm Springs. Top photographs will be published both in a catalog and in Palm Springs Life magazine.

Photographers may submit up to 3 images. The basic entry fee is $35 for the initial image. If you submit additional images the fee will be an additional $10 for each image.

Subcategories for submissions:

Photographs must be relevant to one of the following themes

(1) the natural environment:
a. desert,
b. water
c. mountains

(2) human impact on the planet:
a. consumption
b. destruction or degradation
c. restoration or renewal.

Due to logistical difficulties, only 1 category can be selected from the drop down list EVEN THOUGH multiple images may actually fall into different categories. Judges have been advised of this problem.

A representative number of photographs from each category will be included in the show so that a range of images showing the beauty of the planet, destruction or degradation of the environment by humans, and possibilities for renewal will be shown.

Jury procedure: A two-stage jury will be used in which both relevance to the theme of sustainability and artistic merit are evaluated. The jury process will be blinded as to name and biographical sketch of entrants. The jury includes:

Douglas Fogelson, Distinguished Photographer, Chicago, IL
Katherine Hough, Chief Curator for the Palm Springs Art Museum
Richard Lui, Staff Photographer for the Desert Sun newspaper
Mona Miri, Distinguished Photographer, San Francisco, CA
