REQUIREMENTS: Images: 0 INTRODUCTION The Seattle Office of Arts & Cultural Affairs, in collaboration with Seattle Parks and Recreation and the Seattle Department of Transportation (SDOT), seeks to commission an artist or artist team to create a project that will draw people to the Cheshiahud Lake Union Loop and help them engage with the site in unexpected ways. The selected artist will create a new media work. BACKGROUND The Cheshiahud Lake Union Loop is a multi-use loop that surrounds Lake Union in Seattle. The walking loop connects diverse neighborhoods surrounding the lake and passes through a variety of urban spaces, including residential areas, industrial areas, parks and a working waterfront with historical maritime uses. The loop connects Gasworks and Lake Union parks and links more than 35 pocket parks, street ends and waterways around Lake Union. It improves access to the lake from adjacent neighborhoods, downtown and the University of Washington. The history of sites along the loop exemplifies many of the changes that have taken place in Seattle in the past centuries. The new six-mile trail around Lake Union is named “Cheshiahud” in honor of a Duwamish chief who led a village located on Lake Union. More information about the Duwamish Tribe and Cheshiahud can be found at http://www.duwamishtribe.org/. Home to Native American villages, lumber mills, airplanes, boat-building, the military and recreation, Lake Union has a varied history. The creation of the Cheshiahud Loop presents an opportunity for Seattleites to gain new awareness of this history and newly appreciate the lake that sits at the center of their city. ELIGIBILITY This call is open to artists living in Washington, Oregon, Idaho, Montana, British Columbia and California. Artists may apply as a team, but the application should clearly describe the contribution of each collaborator. The Office of Arts & Cultural Affairs encourages diversity in its collection. Artists whose work is well represented in the city’s collection are eligible to apply, but the artist selection panel will consider artistic diversity as one factor in the selection process. Students are not eligible to apply. SCOPE OF WORK The selected artist will create a participatory new media project drawing on the history and/or context of the site. Possible media and approaches include: podcast or cell-phone based audio work, audio and/or video tours using mobile media and GPS, and walking tours or interactive events using the Web. Regardless of media, the work is intended to draw people to the trail, so it should be experienced in some form on-site in multiple locations along the loop. The artist will also consider how people will learn about and access the work. The artist will develop a strategy for public involvement such as signage, Web presence, and mobile devices made available to the public. In addition to the artwork, which will be available to the public for a minimum of one year, the selected artist will work with the city to provide documentation of the project for the city’s collection. The selected artist will develop this project in collaboration with representatives from the Office of Arts & Cultural Affairs, SDOT and Parks. They will be involved in outreach and communications with local communities in the process. TIMELINE It is anticipated that finalist interviews for this project will take place the week of February 8, 2010. The selected artist must be available to work on this project in spring 2010 and begin presenting the work to the public in early summer 2010.
